(Storage) Space.
35 Years of MetaSystems - 1988
Even then, it became obvious that storage space would play a major role in the new computational methods emerging in the field of image analysis. In 1988, the Maxtor company introduced the first recordable magneto-optical drive. This technology allowed for very secure data storage by combining the techniques of conventional hard disk drives with the then-brand-new ability to write to polymers with lasers (later widely used in CDs and DVDs). MetaSystems quickly realized the potential for archiving important images and patient data and used it until the technology was phased out in the late 2000s.
